We may have set a new record for on-site WD's and in my glance at the names, nearly all were either way over par or, more likely, PGA Tour players. I've heard from a few over the years angered by those getting exemptions to the Sectionals only to no-show or WD. But that doesn't appear to be the case here.
The new standard bearer for WDitis? Columbus in 2015 with its rain delay spawned 39 WD's! Better call for more ambulances.
Memphis had 18, the Bears Club 12, Dallas has 11 and Springfield, Ohio 7.
**Fox Sports 1's wrap show did air at 10 pm PT and it was a very decent first effort considering the difficulty of covering play across the country. While the show didn't capture the emotions and some of the clutch shots that Golf Channel did during their all-day, all-in "Golf's Longest Day" coverage, this was a very serviceable start.
Holly Sonders hosted from a vibrant set at Fox studios in Los Angeles with analysis from two who've qualified a few times: Scott McCarron and Brad Faxon. They made great use of huge video boards, where Holly selected sectionals John King-style and graphics revealed the winning scores. Remote appearances from Robert Lusetich, Shane Bacon and Colleen Dominguez fleshed out some of the qualifiers' stories. Dominguez did mention Chambers Bays, but all-in-all it was very serviceable.
There was one bit of fun: use of the manual scoreboard (RIP) in the show's opening featured Rory McIlroy's name mispelled. Some would be horrified, but anyone who has gone to a few Opens knows this could have been a splash of authenticity!
