Snedeker On Slow Play: "You start giving guys a one-shot penalty, trust me, they’re going to figure it out."
/Alan Bastable's Golf Magazine Q&A with Brandt Snedeker has gotten some notice because of the American star's assertion that drug testing on the PGA Tour needs to go.
However, his slow play comments were much more interesting, though slighly humorous coming after the part where he lauds Commissioner Tim Finchem's great leadership. It's Finchem who has cast a pall over the idea of a slow play penalty, openly stating that he sees no reason to give out a penalty. The very thing Snedeker says is a priority.
Pace of play is one. We’re avoiding the issue. We’re playing five-and-a-half-hour rounds—for threesomes! We don’t give the rules officials enough power, enough strength to say, “Hey, there’s somebody playing slow this week. I know there is. And I have the power to give them a penalty.” And that penalty needs to be a one-shot penalty, not a timing and a fine. You start giving guys a one-shot penalty, trust me, they’re going to figure it out. I understand our courses are tough—blah, blah, blah. I think there’s a way to solve it.
