Does Nike Want To Make An iClub?
/Bloomberg's Matt Townsend reports that Nike obtained a patent last week to "put data-collecting sensors on golf clubs to improve personalization."
In one scenario, the analysis of a swing is shown on a display screen embedded on the back of the club’s head. That would make getting fit for golf clubs faster and more precise, the company said.
“Custom fitting is outdated, and can be inaccurate,” Nike said in documents posted on the website of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. While most fitting is done indoors on a hard surface, the new club would allow golfers to measure a swing out on a course, which would garner more accurate data, Nike said.
Oh yes, that sounds conforming to the Rules of Golf.
But just think, with rumored improvements to the Nano possibly announced today that could turn the mini-iPod into a Bluetooth compatible watch which is already capable of gathering data from Nike+, it could then send the data to your iPhone, which then could send to your iCloud, which then could forward to your instructor and club fitter! You might soon be able to check your text messages and get push notifications on your swing along with recommendations for a new purchase or a recommendation from Siri to quit the game altogether.
I love America.
**So much for the Nano getting redesigned to work as a Bluetooth watch, ala Pebble's forthcoming watch that projects to have rangefinder capabilities.
CNET's Andrew Nusca on the redesigned Nano that is definitely not wrist friendly.
