"We don’t need new golf courses in this economy. We need better ideas for the golf courses we have now."

Kevin Robbins posts some new photos of Pinehurst #2 and after seeing Coore and Crenshaw's work, asks a very salient question.

Why build more golf courses right now? We have golf courses, many of them, like Pinehurst No. 2, in need of nothing more than careful reconsideration and a month or so of hard labor. Imagine, for example, a restored or redesigned Bluebonnet or Morris Williams, two Austin courses that have healthy bones and a distinct soul. I’ll even add Roy Kizer and Jimmy Clay to the discussion (with appreciation for the work the city of Austin conduced a couple of years ago on Clay).

What might Coore and Crenshaw do with those properties? What about Tom Doak or David McLay Kidd? Or John Colligan?

We don’t need new golf courses in this economy. We need better ideas for the golf courses we have now. That’s what San Antonio had in mind with Colligan’s lovely rejuvenation of Brackenridge Park.
