“I forget how much I’ve missed having her out here.”

Tod Leonard doesn't think it's a coincidence that Phil Mickelson posted a 67 at Torrey Pines South the first day his wife was able to walk all 18 holes with him in over a year.

“I forget how much I’ve missed having her out here.”

Whether it was a coincidence or fate, her husband played his best round on the South Course in a long time. Dressed all in black, just like his wife, Phil Mickelson made five birdies on the back nine en route a shooting 5-under-par 67 to match John Daly for the best score on the more demanding of the Torrey Pines courses.

Mickelson was among 10 players tied for fifth, three strokes behind leader Sunghoon Kang, who shot 64 on the North Course.

Looking fit and healthy, Amy Mickelson put her palm up to the bright blue sky, the Pacific Ocean glimmering in the distance, and said, “This is the most perfect, beautiful day. I don’t remember a more beautiful day out here.”
