A Few Farmers Insurance Open Pre-Final Round Reads...

With the Farmers Insurance Open's tightly-packed leaderboard, anyone within five or so of the lead has a shot at the $1.2 million first place check. Throw in perfect January weather, a nice mix of young players eager to break through, and some potentially huge veteran wins, and it could be a dandy.

Leader Patrick Rodgers is riding his driving and putting, fueled by a new putter with a fun connection to his love of Indy racing, as I write for Golfweek.com.

Rodgers is class of 2011 material, but so are Ollie Schniederjans and C.T. Pan, both within striking distance Sunday, writes Jason Sobel.

Stewart Cink's 69 has him two back, but even better is good news on wife Lisa's health, writes Bob Harig.

Pat Perez's father Tony will again call his son's name on the first tee and perhaps this is the year the San Diego native wins. He's two strokes back of leaders Rodgers and Brandt Snedeker. Golfweek's Jeff Babineau looks at the understandably proud dad hoping this is the year.

“It’s a parent’s dream to announce his son in any sport,” Tony Perez said. “But here in golf, you know, you’re right here in front of him, you’re so close … to me, it never changes. I still have butterflies in my stomach. You wish that he hits the fairway. And I know that’s what he’s thinking, too.

Alan Shipnuck recently profiled Pat Perez for SI and it's worth a few minutes if you don't mind the f-bombs.
