NY Times: "Phil Mickelson Never Met Harper Lee, but the Admiration Was Mutual"

While reports have surfaced that Phil Mickelson thinks Tiger was better than most and Rickie will win a major, it was refreshing to read something with a little more depth from the New York Times' Karen Crouse, who considers Mickelson's fascination the late Harper Lee.

Turns out, the recently deceased author was a golfer and in one of the few anecdotes about her ties to the game, enjoyed Mickelson's 2004 Masters win. It's a long and complicated story, but worth checking out. But to spoil it, they never connected.

But there was this from Phil:

As much as Mickelson would have loved the chance to meet Lee, perhaps it is for the best that she remains in his mind the perfect prose and not the imperfect person.

“I had multiple chances to meet Hogan,” Mickelson said, referring to the nine-time major winner Ben Hogan.

“I never did because I didn’t want to have that mythology taken away, have him humanized.”
