Berckman's Road Complete, Now The Fun Speculation Begins
/Bianca Cain Johnson of the Augusta Chronicle reports that Berckman's Road has been successfully been moved and will open February 29th.
Johnson writes:
The new portion sweeps through parking lots previously used by Augusta National. The old portion will be closed to traffic and used as a service road.
The second phase of the project, which involves widening from Wheeler Road to Ingleside Drive with a traffic circle, will begin seeing some work after this year’s tournament, such as utilities being moved, but the major changes to the existing road won’t happen until after the 2017 Masters.
The story goes on to describe pedestrian tunnels and other touches in the works prior to the Masters.
Of greater interest is what happens to the old Berckman's long term and if the club looks to expand the course beyond today's current 4th green and 5th tee in its ongoing effort to combat the amazing strides in core strength.
I would hope the 4th is not touched but that a new 5th tee could be installed allowing for driver to be hit to a restored landing area, assuming the angle can be maintained as the original architects imagined this Road hole descendant.
