Couples Goes To The Whip In USA Captain's Derby

Catching up on the other first world golf news, I finally got to Rex Hoggard's chat with Fred Couples from earlier this week on the Ryder Cup captaincy.

The normally quiet, easy going Couples has not openly campaigned for the gig. He has said Tom Watson did not "cradle his boys enough" and has been putting the task force in air quotes, but appears to be riding the Captaincy horse pretty hard as the 2016 captaincy decision looms. Just showing up at Torrey Pines, where the second Task Force conference call originated, suggested he wants the gig.

From Hoggard's story:

Players en masse threw their support behind Couples to be the next American skipper both publicly and privately. It’s why he had a meeting with PGA of America chief executive Pete Bevacqua in early December to talk about a Couples captaincy.

While Couples can at times go astray in conversations, rambling off topic with amusing anecdotes and observations, on this he was very direct when asked about the opportunity.

“I’d love to do it. Whoever is the next captain I believe they want other players involved who would be the next few captains,” Couples said. “It would be fun.”

Meanwhile my favorite Tweet of the week remains Adam Schupak's shot of Captain No Selfie trying to get out of the modern version of the autograph, and who could blame him?
