"Back in 2000, there were 12 major champions owning 30 titles in the field; this week, there are just four, representing a grand total of six majors."

Jason Sobel of GolfChannel.com assesses the state of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions on the 15th anniversary of the epic Woods-Els dual.

His conclusion? The status of the event "has clearly been diminished."

Back in 2000, there were 12 major champions owning 30 titles in the field; this week, there are just four, representing a grand total of six majors.

It’s not just that the game’s best players are choosing to start their years elsewhere. It also serves as an exemplification of the state of today’s game.

This week’s field owns a world ranking average of more than 15 spots higher than that of 15 years ago, just one simple statistical example of the parity which has enveloped the game.

There is a much-needed re-airing of that epic final round from 2000, especially since you have to pay just to watch the PGA Tour's highlights on YouTube. That should generate tens of dollars for the tour.

Before the copyright claim goes in, there is this immensely enjoyable 22-minute posting of the telecast highlights. As always it's fun to hear the announce team (a younger Tirico sounds like he inhaled helium, but Strange, North, Kratzert and Baker-Finch sound the same). The shots by Els and Woods into Kapalua's 18th are a joy to watch again. Also check out the size of the home green crowd. And stay tuned for the SportsCenter highlights with Dan Patrick afterwards.

First round Hyundai TOC coverage starts at 4:30 ET on Golf Channel, preceded by a two-and-a-half-hour pregame show.
