2014's First And Last 17th Hole Post...
/TPC Sawgrass's iconic hole is talked about too much, perhaps in part because the rest of the golf course or any course just can't live up to the antics there. I swear this will be it. Promise. Until something wild happens.
The fun this week started on Tuesday when the money game of Fowler, Johnson and Mickelson played shots from the other side of the ball. Fowler looked shockingly good as a lefty, Left on the other hand, bunt-dribbled one into the lake. Sam Weinman has the Instagram video clips posted by Rickie.
Wednesday is all about the caddies, and Steve DiMeglio writes about the closest to the hole competition for charity, but also shares this nugget from the pre-Bones/Mickelson days.
Mickelson had never seen Mackay hit a golf shot. With his former boss, Larry Mize, tending the flag 140 yards away and yelling encouraging words, Mackay hit with Bob Estes' 7-iron -- and the ball soared left into the water. Mackay reloaded but this time used a slightly shorter 7-iron from Jeff Maggert.
"And Mize is still tending the flag and Bones hits this beautiful shot and as it starts to come down, Mize jumps out of the way, because it was going to hit him," Mickelson said. "And it flies into the hole and stays.
"Here we are 21 years later and I remember it vividly. It was incredible."
Said Mackay: "The best par I've ever made in my life."
As for stats, Justin Ray has a fun breakdown of the ShotLink numbers suggesting the hole just isn't that hard.
Since 2004, the Players champions have played the 16th hole in a combined 26 under par. Nos. 17 and 18? Each a combined 2 over par.
**Shawn Stefani's caddie, Chris Callas, won with a shot to 7 feet, 8 inches. There were 111 attempts; 51 found the water.
