Prosecutors Call For Suspension Of Rio 2016 Course Construction
/A Shanghai Daily item translating a story Brazil's O Globo is reporting that public prosecutors have called for suspension of work on the Rio 2016 Olympic golf course over environmental concerns, notifying the state government's environmental secretary of its recommendation this week.
From the report.
According to Rio prosecutors, the project breaches laws that protect the site, located on heritage-listed Atlantic rainforest.
The ministry called for work to be halted until a new environmental study was concluded. A spokesperson for Rio's Olympic organizing committee was not immediately available for comment on the matter.
I'm not sure what rainforest they are referring to. (See photo.)
**Duncan Mackay at InsideTheGames.biz adds this:
Officials now have ten days to reply to the latest request and provide additional documentation to prevent work being suspended.
Rio Government officials refused to comment until they had officially received notification of the action.
**An unbylined AP story doesn't shed anything new on the possible stop to construction, but does share extensive details about the condominium development surrounding the project and also shares this:
A spokeswoman for the Rio city government, which is supervising the private-sector project, said the course would be public for 10 years after the Olympics. It's not clear how the course will be run after that.
Hand-painted signs near the course suggest not everyone is happy.
"Golf for Whom?" reads one.
