Fred Couples On Captain Watson: “I think he’s going to think he knows most of the players, but...I don’t know how many he really, really knows."
/In a revealing interview with Martin Dempster of The Scotsman, Fred Couples suggests that Tom Watson was a great choice for the 2014 Ryder Cup captaincy, but he also seems unsure of how in touch Watson might be with today's text messaging players.
From Dempster's story:
Couples described Watson as “totally different” to him in terms of approach to a captaincy but is adamant the golfing senior citizen’s appointment is “no gamble” on behalf of the PGA of America.
“Whereas I can’t change and be serious and kinda strict and stern, Tom Watson is more of a serious student of everybody,” he opined. “I think he’s going to think he knows most of the players, but it’s going to be hard because I don’t know how many he really, really knows. But he’s got a few months to go to tournaments and I’m sure he will have a few dinners and meet the guys, get to know them and figure out what to do.”
Watson didn't necessarily improve the perception that he's skewing older by announcing the selection of 72-year-old Ray Floyd as his second assistant captain. The early reviews are in.
Jason Sobel at GolfChannel.com:
Depending on your age – we’re looking at you, Jordan Spieth – it might be more like your grandfather’s Ryder Cup.
James Corrigan in the Telegraph:
But while the US will welcome Floyd’s renowned competitive spirit, his appointment is hardly likely to quell fears that the team’s management could be out of touch with the players.
During today's announcement, I asked Watson if he would be naming any more captains and he said he was not sure. Many believed Couples would bring the element of cool to offset the intensity of Watson, North and now Floyd, but now I'm not so sure.
