Tracing Omaha CC's Design History

Stu Pospisil looks at the design evolution of U.S. Senior Open host Omaha Country Club, right up to Keith Foster's recent renovation.

According to an unpublished 2008 club history by Omaha's Dennis Mihelich, famed golf architect Robert Trent Jones was brought in late in the 1952 season to evaluate the course, and he recommended removing the “cardiac hills” that included those on 17 and 18.

Jones wasn't hired, but Press Maxwell was, in 1957 to renovate the back nine. He pushed the 10th green back into the trees, moved the 12th green from the left side of the fairway to the right, shortened the 13th hole and lowered the hill leading to the 14th green. The only greens untouched were the 11th, 15th and 16th.
