Bethpage Black And The Politics Of Hosting Majors

Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post in an "exclusive" reports that Barclay's host Bethpage is courting the PGA of America and a Ryder Cup, even though that was reported exactly a year ago by Golf World Monday and Sam Weinman.

What was revealing in the story: candid comments from the USGA's Mike Davis, who essentially rules out any course that is a regular PGA Tour stop (Pebble Beach being the obvious exception). This would seem to be part of what ails Torrey Pines.

“In the case of Bethpage hosting [The Barclays], there’s absolutely zero problem from the USGA standpoint,” said Davis, who has the U.S. Open booked through 2019, with 2018 being played at Shinnecock Hills on eastern Long Island, therefore just about eliminating Bethpage from the 2020 slot. “But I will also say that if Bethpage were to host the tour every year, we wouldn’t come back.”

Mark Herrmann reported in Sunday's Newsday that Bethpage Black hosts the 2016 Barclays.
