The Best U.S. Open Setup Ever Didn't Encourage Drivers!
/John Garrity calls the Olympic Club contours, holes and tee placements the "best setup in US Open history." Besides the nature of such a sweeping statement he also makes this point:
The only criticism of Olympic that causes me to rub my chin is the one about drivers -- or the lack thereof.
How can it be the best ever when one of the two most important clubs in the bag could not be used with regularity?
Of course, if the ball were controlled and rolled back a small percentage the course could have been wider and drivers used.
