Amateur Beau On His Impressive 70: "I expected to go out there and get a lot out of my round.”
/Ryan Lavner on 17-year-old amateur Beau Hossler's opening 70 at Olympic, which currently has him T4.
To put Hossler’s round into context, consider that Patrick Cantlay, the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, shot 76 Thursday. So did Phil Mickelson, a five-time runner-up at the U.S. Open. Masters champion Bubba Watson was two shots worse.
Asked if he was surprised by his start at Olympic -- supposedly the toughest major-championship test since Oakmont in 2007 -- Hossler shrugged, “Not at all. I’ve been playing really well lately. I expected to go out there and get a lot out of my round.”
Here is Hossler's post-round transcript.
**Shane Bacon reports on Hossler's round and notes this:
On top of that, Hossler, who just finished up his junior year at Santa Margarita High School in California, didn't even hit the ball all that well on Thursday. Hossler found just five fairways and nine greens but was able to salvage a round that many of his boyhood idols couldn't, including Mickelson, who he played a practice round with on Tuesday.
