Mirror Closes Out Mail 3&2 In Rory Club-Tossing Battle Of The Headlines
/You knew Rory's club toss at Wentworth would get some nice play by the tabloids, setting up a battle between the lead contenders.
My name is Hurl: McIlroy faces fine for tossing his club in anger
A touch of the Tigers as frustrated McIlroy loses his grip at Wentworth
Well played, Mr. Mirror!
In the writing category, James Corrigan described the incident with the most flair.
...this was a highly uncharacteristic reaction. Lest we forget, there is a fierce competitor behind everyone’s favourite golfer.
As he watched his second shot fly towards the out-of-bounds on the par-five 12th, the fury at an attempted fade becoming a ruinous pull burned deep. And then his provisional headed into a bunker. Farewell, seven-iron.
Lawrence Donegan in the Guardian:
The world No1 was already 11 holes into a bad day at the office when he hit his second shot at the par-five 12th hole just a few inches out-of-bounds. The cost was a two-shot penalty and a bogey six but it was the club-throwing reaction that caught the attention. When it comes to being mild-mannered, McIlroy usually makes Clark Kent look Joey Barton. Not this time. "Yep," he said afterwards when asked if he had been overwhelmed by frustration. "I was trying to cut [the shot] in, trying to hold it up against the wind and double-crossed it. I ended up out-of-bounds by about an inch."
