Slow Pokes Creating Kapalua, BCS Clash!
/Doug Ferguson asked on Twitter this morning: "What time is the game? Because I'm not convinced the final round at Kapalua will finish by then."
Check out the names in the final four groups, a who's who of the PGA Tour's slowest (names in bold would be the slowest).
10:35 am Frazar, Harrison Crane, Ben
10:45 am Molder, Bryce Na, Kevin
10:55 am Laird, Martin Simpson, Webb
11:05 am Stricker, Steve Byrd, Jonathan
Steve Elling notes that even with a tiny field, telecasts have been running long, virtually guaranteeing an overlap with the BCS title game.
Despite a mere 27-man field, the Golf Channel confirmed that broadcasts have run long in both the second and third rounds, including 35 minutes past the projected time on Sunday night as the third round was completed. The second round on Saturday night finished 20 minutes late.
For the first time in event history, the tour experimented with a Monday finish this week to boost interest and ratings, intentionally moving up tee times in the final round on Monday to finish at 3 p.m. local time, before the BCS game commences. But the pace of play this week has at times been sleepy, at best.
Moreover, the Kapalua event has finished in a playoff in three of the past six years and five of the last 12.
Of course, the Commissioner has issued an edict that slow play penalties are off the table, so don't go blaming the rules staff for not doing anything to speed these turtles up.
**There is a fantastic video circulating of Jonathan Byrd taking 2 minutes to his a par-3 tee shot on the 11th hole that is one of the most stunning slow play exhibitions I've ever seen, complete with Byrd taking practice swing divots. Rolfing was forced to say, '"Jonathan is never one to pull the trigger when he's not quite ready".
How can such a nice, classy and bright guy be so rude!?
