Wie Leads Canadian Open And In Public Perception

Michelle Wie is co-leading the Canadian Open with a long putter. Earlier this week, the LA Times's Diane Pucin looked at Wie's decision to get her degree from Stanford, featuring this criticism from Annika Sorenstam:

"I think her focus, in my opinion, should be more on golf," Sorenstam said. "She's very distracted with school, doesn't really play as much full time as I thought she would. I think she needs to come out here and compete more regularly."

Sorenstam, who did praise Wie's potential and athletic ability, also said, "You wonder if she's mentally strong enough to finish at the top."

I can't remember the last time the Times printed four golf related letters, but that was the case Saturday after readers saw Annika's comments.

A sampling:

If I were a prospective employer I would be looking to employ the best people for my company.... Hmmm, let's see: Arizona dropout or Stanford graduate. Ms. Sorenstam owes Ms. Wie an apology for criticizing Wie's commitment to a quality education.

So Annika, who after having had enough of the college experience dropped out of Arizona before her second year, publicly criticizes Michelle Wie for focusing too much on her studies, at the expense of her golf game. "She [Wie] is very distracted by school...."

Sounds like the University of Miami just found their next athletic director.
