Valhalla: Another Major Means Another Redo...
/Alex Miceli reports the 2014 PGA host is in need of another green reconstruction, confirms PGA CEO Joe Steranka.
Flooding in the past two years has done irreparable damage to the greens, which must be rebuilt to modern specifications and regrassed, Steranka said.
“We were trying to wait until after 2014 to do it,” Steranka said. “We did probes and tests on some of the holes that the (Floyd’s Fork and Brush Run) creeks go along, and there’s mush several feet down that is hurting the whole green structure and the turf.”
Jack Nicklaus-designed Valhalla, opened in 1986 and site of the 2008 Ryder Cup, also hosted the 1996 and 2000 PGAs, with renovations preceding each event. Nicklaus’ son Jack II, president of Nicklaus Design, was in Louisville this month to assess the anticipated work.
