What Happened To Parts Of Phil's Design Diatribe?
/The ASAP people do a great job and this week's transcripts from the PGA Championship are promptly posted and clean, but maybe too clean in the case of Phil Mickelson whose criticisms of Atlanta Athletic Club, Rees Jones and the paradigm shift in modern design made for a great read. Unfortunately, numerous writers and now the Golf Channel post game confirm much more was said, architects were named and yet, it's not in the transcript.
Anyone record it? Anyone know why portions of his comments were left out?
Now you why scribblers already record these scrums even when there is a transcript!
****Golf Channel's excellent post game did a super job covering the entire day and made sure to discuss Phil's comments. Thankfully, they also showed clips and it appears the transcription was just faulty, as some of the above comments were interspersed with other remarks inexplicably left out of the transcript.
Among the highlights, Phil cited play being down 25% at Atlanta Athletic Club, suggested there "are some great ones," in modern design, mentioning "Coore, Crenshaw, Hanse, Kidd but the guy who did this one…"
Mike Tierney of the New York Times went to the club and got this reply to Mickelson's remarks:
Tom Adderhold, the club’s general chairman and a charter club member, took issue with the complaint without directly addressing the alleged statistical decline.
“Phil is not a member, so I don’t know where he got his information,” said Adderhold, who indicated that the pace of rounds by guests has picked up.
Regarding “the guy,” as Mickelson referred to Jones, Adderhold said: “Rees has just been tremendous. We were fortunate to have had Rees come in.”
The first or the second time?
Mickelson was wrong on that count. Members played 3,600 rounds in June compared to 2,400 the previous year, according to Tom Adderhold, tournament general chairman, who added that members play from tee boxes based on their handicaps.
