"Not every course has to end with a strong par-4."
/Andrew Ramspacher files what should be required reading for anyone who thinks a par-3 is a lousy way to end a golf tournament, documenting the Sunday thrills on the finishing one-shotter at Greenbrier. I did get a chuckle reading Gary Woodland went with wedge after being torn between that and a 9-iron...from 169 yards!
After the comedy:
Stallings had birdied 11 earlier in the day, sticking a 9-iron to five feet. So all it took was a pair of repeat swings.
"Repetition and visualization is something that I work with my coach and my sports psychologist really well on it as far as drawing upon really good shots that you hit," he said. "And I hit a great shot on 11 to get in there about four or five feet for a birdie.
"My caddie Josh said, 'Man, I want to see that same one.'"
He performed that same one twice, giving the overflow crowd at 18 a memorable ending.
"That was awesome," Estes said. "I know everyone here loved it, so that was really exciting. Three guys is better than two. Five would have been better than three.
"But, yeah, it was really exciting for everybody."
However ...
"The best finish for a championship is still probably a par-4," Estes said, "when you're challenged to get the tee shot with a driver in the fairway and then you have to hit two good shots to finish it off.
"But still this is a great setting. Not every course has to end with a strong par-4.
"This was a great finish."
