Oakland Hills To Get 2016 U.S. Amateur, In Talks For 2020 U.S. Open?

Tim Twentyman of the Detroit News reports that Oakland Hills "is in negotiations" with the USGA "to host the U.S. Open as early as 2020, which is the next available date, according to a source."

One of the most famous golf clubs in the country, Oakland Hills has a long history of hosting major golf events, and the 2016 U.S. Amateur will double as a centennial celebration for the club.

Oakland Hills, home to the famous South Course nicknamed "The Monster" by 1951 Open champion Ben Hogan, was founded in 1916.

In the 1996 Open, Steve Jones won with a 2-under 278.

Did you have to remind us?

I'll be shocked if the USGA is very far along in those 2020 U.S. Open talks since they are locked up through 2019 and have said they are going to be taking a break from announcing future Open venues not only because it's not prudent to lock yourself up so far in advance, but there is a general feeling that it's disrespectful to future USGA committees to have booked up site selection so far down the road.

Which means they'll probably announce Oakland Hills for 2020 at next year's Open!
