“I knew where I was. I knew I needed to make eagle on 18 for 59. It’s tough to hole it from 152.”

The AP game story on the amazing amateur Patrick Cantlay's 60 following a first round 67 (also played Friday) to give him a four-stroke lead in the Traveler's Championship.

Jason Sobel reviews the remarkable whirlwind golf tour of Cantlay over the last month.

Brian Wacker with the details on the course record breaking round.

Billy Horschel was one of the players in Cantlay's group Friday and had a front row seat.

"He hits it straight, makes a ton of putts and has no weakness right now from what I could tell," Horschel said. "His ball was at the flag the whole day."

Meh. Cantlay, meanwhile, more or less shrugged it off.

Never mind the fact that he became just the 24th player in TOUR history to record a round of 60 -- or that he became the first amateur to do it.

Cantlay is So Cal cool, as Horschel puts it. Laid back, mellow, relaxed.

The same could be said about how he played Friday when he made 11 birdies, two eagles (both on the par-5 13th) and just two bogies over 36 holes.

Sean Martin says the super-low round is just part of a pattern for Cantlay.

The 60 was one of several impressive rounds for Cantlay recently. He set the course record at famed Los Angeles Country Club earlier this year, shooting a bogey-free 63 at the beefed-up layout, which opened late last year after a renovation. Then there was a 60 at his home course, Virginia Country Club, which was played in the presence of PGA Tour player John Mallinger, who holds the course record of 59.

The PGA Tour's Round 2 recap says a win would make Cantlay the youngest ever in a PGA Tour event.

The youngest winner since 1900 on the PGA TOUR is Johnny McDermott, who was 19 years, 10 months and 14 days old when he captured the 1911 U.S. Open title. Cantlay will be 19 years, 3 months and 9 days old on Sunday.

The PGATour.co video inexplicably features few highlights Cantlay's round, perhaps because the CBS/Golf Channel crew had signed off. That really makes it a shame he didn't shoot 59!
