"With most key logistical matters addressed, confidence is higher than ever that Cadillac will sponsor a PGA Tour event at Detroit Golf Club in 2012."

I'm trying to read between Carlos Monarrez's lines in two Detroit Free-Press stories about the likelihood of the PGA Tour returning to Detroit with Cadillac as the sponsor. So far, I'm not figuring out what is in play here but it does seem like the potential demise of the Heritage and this week's WGC event at Doral will be a part of any domino effect that ushers in a return to Detroit.

From the first piece:

When the Free Press first reported in November that Cadillac was positioning itself to host a PGA Tour event in Detroit, the key stumbling block for doing so in 2011 was the lack of an opening on the tour’s schedule. But that might change next year.

The Heritage tournament in Hilton Head, S.C., has been looking for a sponsor for 18 months, ever since Verizon announced plans to pull out after the 2010 tournament. The Heritage is scheduled for April 21-24. Last week, PGA Tour vice president Ty Votaw told the Associated Press it was “imperative” that the tournament find a sponsor if it is to survive after this year.

The demise of the Heritage would clear space for a tournament in Detroit, although it likely would be held in June or July and would require the tour to move the date of another tournament to the spring.

In another story about Detroit Golf Club, this caught my eye:

A tour event would be played on the 6,837-yard North Course, which would be lengthened and likely have the order of holes rerouted.

Whoa! 6,837? In the summer! Where are they going to find 400 yards?
