Where Would You Take The Match Play?
/It's sounding more and more like the WGC Accenture Match Play will be leaving Tucson's Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain Resort and Cholla Nursery sooner than later. Accenture is not thrilled with the place and we know how the players, media and fans feel about the Nicklaus course that was designed for this event and yet somehow manages not to include much in the way of charm of memorability.
So I ask, where would you take the match play?
Remember, before you get any romantic notions about taking the event around the world, a few stipulations:
- It has to stay in America, preferably in the southwest.
- The site has to offer attractive options for corporate hospitality
- And third and certainly least, the architecture should be interesting for match play.
This is why I nominate a return to the PGA West Stadium Course. Pete Dye's west coast clone looks crazy on TV, it should be able to attract fans and plenty of volunteers, it's somewhat accessible (especially from Los Angeles which traditionally precedes the event), and has the basics for all of Accenture's needs.
But if you can find something better, please name it. Please! I'm begging.
**I left out another requirement: a venue willing to pay for the honor of hosting the event. How could I have forgotten the most important trait?
