"San Diego not feeling much love from USGA"

Tod Leonard explores the question of why Torrey Pines is not on the USGA's radar for a future Open, and shares this from Mike Davis:

Davis called the 2008 U.S. Open “memorable and historic” and said Torrey Pines South provided a “superb” test of golf. He said he believed that no major changes would have to be made to stage another Open.

However, two sources with strong USGA ties said they don’t believe Davis is enamored of Torrey Pines, which was selected in 2002 for ‘08, before Davis was in his current position.

In his email, Davis said, “It is true I personally feel some U.S. Open courses are more architecturally interesting than others. Golf course architecture is like art – it’s subjective. … That said, there must be a reason that the likes of Shinnecock Hills, Pebble Beach, Merion or Oakmont are higher-ranked (on the so-called ‘top 100’ lists) than other U.S. Open venues we repeatedly go back to.”
