(A Few Great) Architects Week On Morning Drive...
/...and some people who will find that history is not kind, as we look back on their work and realize they left the game with too many expensive, forgettable, soulless designs.
They certainly covered the opposite ends of the spectrum with this week's lineup of architects appearing on Golf Channel's Morning Drive.
For Immediate Release:
Morning Drive will feature some of the game’s most renowned golf course designers next week during “Architects Week” (Dec. 2-8), where they will discuss the past, present and future of golf course design. Morning Drive airs live on Golf Channel seven days a week from 7-9 a.m. ET. Thursday and Friday this week, Morning Drive will air from 9:30-11:30 a.m. ET.
Scheduled to appear:
Monday:
Bill Coore – Partner, Coore & Crenshaw. Oversaw recent restoration of Pinehurst No. 2; designers of Colorado Golf Club (2013 Solheim Cup host site), and many others.
Greg Norman – Hall of Famer established Greg Norman Course Design in 1987, and has opened more than 75 courses throughout the world, with nearly 40 projects in various stages of development.
And who says the future market for redesign work is bleak?
Tuesday:
Jim Urbina – An associate with Pete Dye and Tom Doak, Urbina assisted in the designs of Sebonack Golf Club, Pacific Dunes Course at Bandon Dunes and co-designed Old Macdonald Course at Bandon Dunes.
Rees Jones –Jones has designed a vast portfolio of courses worldwide that have hosted multiple major championships, including U.S. Opens, PGA Championships, Open Championships, Ryder Cups, Walker Cups and a Presidents Cup.
Whoa there, let's not get carried away. If we see a Rees-toration of an Open Championship site, it's all over. The man has done enough damage!
Wednesday:
Gil Hanse – Course designer for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Tom Doak – Co-designer of Sebonack Golf Club, Pacific Dunes Course at Bandon Dunes and many others.
Thursday:
Jack Nicklaus – Hall of Famer who founded Nicklaus Design, Nicklaus has personally designed nearly 300 courses and that have hosted more than 750 championships to date.
Personally? Right, and Wolfgang Puck personally prepares every frozen pizza he sells in grocery stores.
Friday:
Bob Cupp – Renowned golf course architect whose courses have hosted more than 50 championships, including seven Major Championships. Cupp was the first recipient of Golf World Magazine’s “Golf Architect of the Year” in 1992.
No love for Liberty National, especially after the wildly successful second and third redos?
Tom Fazio – Has designed more than 120 courses and has more credits on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Courses and Golfweek’s collection of America’s Best than any other living designer.
Rescheduling my root canal for Friday as I hit post.
